About Haiti
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, the most “food-insecure” country in the Western Hemisphere and the second most food insecure in the world. Safe drinking water, adequate medical care and sufficient food are scarce. There are few education and advancement opportunities. The 2010 earthquake took the lives of more than 316,000 people. The cholera epidemic that followed has taken thousands more lives. Additionally, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases continue to be major causes of death. Political unrest and corruption permeate their country and culture. Most Haitians are friendly and grateful for every good deed toward them and their children. “In Haitian families, children are thought to be gifts from God, and parents (specifically mothers) will do almost anything to ensure that their children’s basic needs are met, even if it means neglecting their own needs.” State University of New York: New Paltz: Institute for Disaster Mental Health: Tip Sheet on Haitian Culture.
